Your phone or watch already measures how fast you walk, quietly, in the background. A 2025 study suggests that number is worth a second look — because it tracked with a strikingly different cancer risk, and part of the reason why is written in your blood.
What the study found
Researchers followed 431,598 UK Biobank participants and compared self-reported brisk walkers against slow walkers: brisk walkers had a 13% lower risk of any cancer (HR 0.87). They then checked whether the same pattern held in a very different population — the Hong Kong Osteoporosis Study, 1,311 Chinese adults with objectively timed walking speed. There, people walking at least 1.0 metres per second had a 45% lower cancer risk than slower walkers (HR 0.55). For lung cancer specifically, brisk UK Biobank walkers had 53% lower risk.
The researchers then asked why, by testing whether blood biomarkers explained the gap. Combined, CRP C-Reactive Protein (High Sensitivity), white blood cell count, total cholesterol and LDL Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol statistically explained about 26% of the link between walking speed and cancer risk — inflammation and cholesterol markers were doing real, measurable work.
What it means for you
This is a metric you likely never have to open an app for — Apple Health and most Android trackers already log your walking pace Walking Speed automatically. If you track hs-CRP C-Reactive Protein (High Sensitivity) or LDL Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) in nubu, this is one of the clearer real-world links between a passive wearable number and an actual lab value. "Brisk" in these studies roughly means a pace you could hold a conversation at but not comfortably sing — about 1.0 m/s or faster.
An honest word on limits
This is an observational study: people who walk briskly likely differ in other ways too (fitness, weight, smoking, other habits) that the researchers could only partly adjust for, so this shows association, not proof that walking faster itself prevents cancer. And the biomarkers above only explain about a quarter of the link — most of why walking speed matters is still unexplained. Treat this as a genuine, well-replicated signal worth paying attention to, not a guarantee.
So what can you actually do?
- Pick up the pace on a walk you already take — the goal isn't more walking, it's brisker walking.
- Use the "talk, not sing" test as a rough gauge of brisk pace if you don't track speed directly.
- Check your own CRP and cholesterol trend in nubu — if they're elevated, this is one lever, not the only one.
