If you had to pick one thing to fix first — your sleep or your daily steps — which one actually moves your lab numbers more? A 2025 study pooling data from six countries went looking for the answer, using device-measured activity and sleep rather than anyone's self-report.
What the study found
The ProPASS Consortium analysed 11,903 adults wearing thigh-mounted accelerometers across the UK, Australia, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands — median 9,950 steps a day. People in the lowest step tertile (under 8,475 steps/day) combined with irregular sleep had measurably worse numbers than the most active, most regular-sleeping group: total cholesterol +0.15 mmol/L, HDL High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) −0.17 mmol/L, plus a higher BMI and waist circumference.
The more interesting part is in how the researchers broke the two habits apart. Their own analysis states the worse triglyceride Triglycerides and HbA1c Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) numbers were "primarily driven by a lower number of steps" rather than by irregular sleep — and that low step counts were linked to lower HDL "regardless of sleep duration." In this dataset, for these specific markers, movement carried more weight than sleep.
What it means for you

An honest word on limits
This is a cross-sectional snapshot — it compares different people at one point in time, not the same people before and after changing their habits, so it can't prove that walking more today will move your labs later. The per-person effect sizes are also modest (a fraction of a mmol/L) — meaningful at a population level, not a dramatic personal transformation on their own.
So what can you actually do?
- Treat steps and sleep as two separate targets, not a trade-off — hitting one doesn't excuse skipping the other.
- Aim past ~11,500 steps/day if you're currently in the lower range — that's roughly where this study's "high" group started.
